Optimism #97 - September 14, 2027
Dear clients and friends,September is my favourite month of the year.
The weather is nice but cooler. It’s apple and pear season in the orchards. The lake water is warm and days are still long.
I don’t see much to report in terms of dividend increases. There will be more in the late fall.
Insiders are buying mostly in precious metals … little or no dividends so not my thing.
Here is an article from the Globe about travel insurance being voided in certain circumstances.
Here is one from the National Post, talking about the implications for borrowers due to interest rates rising.
If you have a floating rate, maybe it’s time to lock in?
A friend of mine’s parents are in their late 80’s. Sadly she is getting quite deaf and he quite blind.
My wife loves gadgets and has those Meta glasses, with built in camera, video, speakers and Bluetooth which connects to her phone. While staring at a church, Tamara asked ‘meta’ what she sees. The camera searched the church and said it’s most likely this, and then a whole bunch of detail about when it was built and by whom, which turned out to be accurate. The speakers are in the arms of the glasses so only she can hear the explanation. And it’s totally hands free. We were riding bikes at the time. The tech is remarkable.
Our friend was fascinated and bought her dad a new i-phone and these glasses. Now in a sense, he can see again and is reconnected with the world. He has learned how to ask his phone to call and text, he can ask the glasses what they see in front of him. He can ask them to read to him and play music. Despite his irreversible blindness, he has a new lease on life and is no longer a burden to his wife, who has sufficient challenges of her own. What a time to be alive.
Happy September.
