Optimism #55 -September 23, 2022It’s a bit like owning a million-dollar home and seeing your neighbor across the street with a similar one, sell for half a million. What do you do except scratch your head? Another neighbor could sell for $400,000. Brace for the irrational. Prices rarely reflect true value.

Optimism #49 - June 16, 2022The news is ugly, but our dividends roll in. Don’t sell your good quality holdings. If you have cash, buy more, but my limited sense says be patient because it will go down more before going on to new highs.

Optimism #34 - October 20, 2021Quarterly statements are out soon and I am sure you will be pleased. Jun 18, 2021
OPTIMISM #30 - June 16, 2021As the market gets closer to fairly valued, there is little to chat about. A flurry of dividends landed in our accounts at the end of May and beginning of June. Being paid without working is fun.
Jun 1, 2021
OPTIMISM #29 - June 1, 2021Stock prices continue to climb on more good news. My Canada bias is shining, as are your dividends and overall returns.
May 14, 2021

OPTIMISM #27 - April 22nd, 2021Financial planning is a puzzle. Some of the of pieces fell out of the box and are missing. Others are blank. We have to colour them in ourselves.
Apr 14, 2021
OPTIMISM #26 - April 13th, 2021Dividend increases are mainly slow but steady these days. Companies are cautiously making increases, but wary of future risks as well as consumer optics of doing ‘too well’ in Covid times.
Mar 19, 2021
OPTIMISM #25 - March 19, 2021he Canadian market is flat today, but our portfolios are up. It’s been like this quite a few days in the past month. The culprit… Shopify.

Dec 8, 2020
OPTIMISM #22 - December 8, 2020I was thinking it would be a good idea for us to write ourselves a letter. With special instructions to open when the next market correction happens.
Nov 23, 2020
OPTIMISM #21 - November 23, 2020Not much need to be optimistic as the rebound in share prices is doing it for us. I believe there is much more upside in banks, pipeline and telco shares among others.
Nov 9, 2020

OPTIMISM #16 - September 29, 2020I chopped the text below from a Norman Rothery column in the Globe and Mail last week called Making the Case for the sleepy approach to Dividend Investing.
Sep 23, 2020
OPTIMISM #15 - September 23, 2020Markets look really ugly today, but upon closer examination the pain is focussed on energy, marijuana and Shopify stocks. Damage is generally minimal in our not so boring dividend payers and others such as CN Rail and Canadian Tire are up nicely.
Sep 11, 2020

Jul 30, 2020
OPTIMISM #10 - July 30th, 2020I have been searching for new signs of optimism and hope I don’t sound like a broken record. If you’ve known me for a while you know that I am generally a realist. My wife says I’m a pessimist.
Jul 3, 2020
OPTIMISM #9 - July 3, 2020It’s been an interesting week or two since my last commentary. News has been positive. 1.The New York Times report Wall Street’s best quarter since 1998:
Jun 22, 2020
OPTIMISM #8 - June 22, 2020Trends never seem to go in straight lines, but the general direction seems positive. I like this wording: “ …risk is more often in the price you pay rather than the company purchased.”

OPTIMISM #6 - June 3, 2020Reading the morning news, I find it ironic that there is very little to be optimistic about and yet it’s better than what’s on TV. However, if you look at share prices of our beloved dividend growth stocks, quite a different picture emerges.
